Hungary argues for realistic climate goals in EU debate
The European Commission proposes to reduce the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. According to the Hungarian position, the objectives should be defined in such a way that they are adapted to the different economic and social conditions of the member states, said Anikó Raisz, the State Secretary responsible for the environment, in the public media.
The State Secretary reminded that Hungary has currently achieved a 48 percent reduction compared to 1990, which exceeds the EU average (38%). She added that it is important that further commitments do not fall disproportionately on countries that have already implemented significant emission reductions.
According to the Hungarian government, climate targets can only be accepted with clear conditions and a financing background. Anikó Raisz mentioned the rapid expansion of solar cell capacity and afforestation programs as examples, which significantly contribute to the fulfillment of the commitments.
The focus of the discussion is the 2040 target, which the member states will continue to discuss in the coming months.
