Brussels’ pressure on the Mercosur free trade agreement, which would provide duty-free access to South American food imports into the EU, is unacceptable – the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives (Magosz) and the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) told MTI on Wednesday.

According to the position of the interest groups, the European Commission wants the agreement to be approved urgently despite the fact that it carries a serious market and food safety risk. According to the EU farmers’ organizations, EU producers would suffer serious damage, while they are also adversely affected by the effects of dumping from Ukraine. Those concerned may be most concerned about production standards, food chain safety rules and sustainability – they wrote. Magosz and NAK object that the EU is continuously tightening the rules of agricultural and food production against its own producers, but with the free trade agreement it would allow South American imports produced under less strict conditions. This double standard could also endanger the right of European citizens to healthy food, and the agreement would also be concluded at a time when the development of the Common Agricultural Policy, which determines the future of EU agriculture, is uncertain. According to the Hungarian agricultural interest groups, only an agreement that respects the interests of agriculture, the food industry and consumers can be accepted – the statement reads.
