Magazine: Great visuals are an advantage
Video mapping, touchscreen, virtual reality – and we are stunned already before we start eating! The Roca brothers and Heston Blumenthal say the best culinary experience is the one that affects all senses at the same time. It is enough to mention the culinary operas staged by the Roca brothers in El Celler de Can Roca. These events were so successful that this March they opened a new restaurant in Barcelona: in Opera Samfaina similar spectacles are held daily.
The restaurant of the future will be like Inamo in London in many ways. Instead of printed menu cards there are touchscreens built into the table. Having ordered the food, guests can watch various things on these screens, from moving tablecloths to the chef working.
Belgian enterprise Skulmapping makes 2-3 minute films for restaurants, using video mapping, 3D and hologram technology. Their Le Petit Chef concept projects a small chef onto the table to ‘model’ the food that the guest has ordered before serving.
In the bar of City Social – Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred restaurant in London – a virtual reality cocktail menu will be introduced in June, relying on a smartphone app called Mirage.
