Magazine: SPAR supermarket at OMV petrol station
October brought the opening of the first SPAR express store at an OMV petrol station located on Budapest’s Fehérvári Road. The store is the first supermarket at a filling station in Hungary. SPAR and OMV plan to open four more SPAR express stores. A wide selection of goods is waiting for shoppers in the new store, including fresh products, and prices are lower than customers are used to in petrol station shops. Erwin Schmuck, managing director of SPAR Hungary told that the new store is open 24 hours a day on 365 days of the year and sells SPAR’s private label products at SPAR prices. The four new units to be opened in the next twelve months will follow the same strategy. SPAR and OMV’s objective is to establish a model where petrol station customers can also do their daily shopping with one stop. Wilfried Gepp, managing director of OMV Hungária reckons that by opening the store they reacted to a growing demand from customers for one-stop fuel and food buying. At certain filling stations with supermarkets OMV plans to keep selling its quality coffee, sandwiches and baked goods. SPAR and OMV’s new form of cooperation doesn’t include Austrian units – exclusively VIVA stores will be operated at petrol stations there.
