Sümegi and Sons Winery – Keller Kft. is located between Baja and Érsekcsanád. It is one of the most important wineries in the Hajós-Baja wine region. One of the owners, Dr Zsombor Sümegi told our magazine that the family enterprise completed the grape replanting programme they had started back in 2013. They also modernised their cellar and wine technology. Sümegi wines’ results in international competitions in the last couple of years show that the quality of wines improved. The company also revamped its image and introduced a new brand name, Sümeghy. According to feedback, the switch was successful and the new, distinctive designs for the Pinceválogatás, Vinotéka and Birtokbor lines make it easier for Sümeghy wines to stand out from the crowd. In 2012 the company started exporting to China and by 2014 a stable partnership system was established. The winery primarily sells dry reds and icewines in the Chinese market, and there is chance that sales will improve steadily. As for the domestic market, the winery’s Cserszegi Fűszeres won at the 19th Cserszegi Fűszeres competition in Soltvadkert and the Cserszegi Fűszeres dessert wine, made from withered grapes, was named the Wine of Bács-Kiskun County. These two wines were awarded with silver medals at AWC Vienne, one of Europe’s biggest wine competitions. Sümeghy Cabernet Sauvignon won gold medals in the Danube Wine Region and Hajós-Baja wine region competitions. In addition to this, Sümegi Winery specialises in making icewines and dessert wines. Sümeghy wines can be found in more than 1,000 shops. The company has also started manufacturing ground grape seed and in 2014 they appeared in shops with grape seed oils. These products target women and this is reflected in their design too; the next step for the company is putting a grape seed-based cosmetics line on the market.
