Workers who use generative AI on a daily basis experience higher pay, greater job security, and productivity—while a third of the global workforce regularly feels overwhelmed. PwC’s 2019 Global Workforce Hopes and Fears research highlights not only the tangible labor market benefits of AI, but also the unequal access to the tools and resources needed to apply the technology. According to PwC’s latest global research, which surveyed nearly 50,000 workers, those who use generative AI (GenAI) on a daily basis are significantly more likely to experience tangible benefits than those who rarely use it, in terms of productivity (92% vs. 58%), job security (58% vs. 36%) and pay (52% vs. 32%). Additionally, daily AI users are more optimistic across all metrics and see their future as more promising.

Skills Gap: Leaders Lead

While companies are increasingly investing in skills development programs to help employees effectively use new technology, the survey found that these resources are not equally accessible to employees. Only 51% of non-managers feel they have the tools they need to learn and develop, compared to 66% of managers and 72% of senior managers.

“Employees who use AI on a daily basis are already seeing higher earnings and greater job stability. But to deliver these benefits more broadly, companies need to go beyond simply focusing on training, and redesign the content of the job and redefine the human-machine interface. The success of this will determine whether GenAI truly drives growth and equality, or remains a missed opportunity,” said Pete Brown, global workforce leader at PwC.

Based on current trends, those who are already using AI are expected to continue to do so. increase their advantage in the labor market over other participants. 75% of daily AI users feel that learning and development opportunities are available to them, compared to only 59% of infrequent users. This highlights that the right support plays a key role in effectively applying the tools and creating business value.

There are also significant differences in the extent to which employees feel that they work in a workplace culture that supports learning. Overall, 54% said their team treats mistakes as learning opportunities, but while this rate is 65% in the technology sector, it is only 47% in the transport and logistics sector.

Only 14% use GenAI on a daily basis

Daily GenAI users are much more optimistic about the future of their role in the next 12 months (69%) than those who rarely (51%) or never use it (44%).

While 54% of employees have used AI in their work in the past year, regular use remains low: only 14% of those who use GenAI on a daily basis, a slight increase from 12% in 2024. Even fewer (6%) work with AI agents on a daily basis. These figures indicate significant potential for growth and exploitation.

Lack of trust, overload and financial difficulties

70% of respondents feel satisfied with their job at least one day a week, and everyone experiences symptoms of stress. Of the almost 50,000 respondents, only 53% feel highly optimistic about the future of their own position, while the expectations of non-managers (43%) lag significantly behind those of managers (72%).

Trust in management is also divided: only 64% understand their organization’s goals, and this rate is even lower among non-managers and Generation Z. More than a third (35%) of respondents feel overwhelmed at least once a week, compared to 42% of Gen Z.

55% of the global workforce is struggling financially, up from 52% in 2024. Less than half (43%) of employees have received a raise in the past year, and less than a fifth (17%) have been promoted. The intention to seek a raise and promotion has also decreased compared to the previous year, from 43% to 37% and from 35% to 32%, respectively.
