High risk of aflatoxin contamination in dairy products – Nébih found it in a surprising place
The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) ordered a national target inspection after the authority’s laboratory detected aflatoxin contamination in quantities above the limit in milk products intended for direct consumption. The affected items are not in circulation, domestic milk and milk products can be consumed safely. The pollution originates from feed, so it is extremely important that grain growers, livestock keepers and milk processors alike regularly carry out self-monitoring tests.
The Nébih laboratory detected aflatoxin contamination in the products of a dairy plant in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in a quantity slightly above the limit value, therefore – taking into account the current industry conditions and risk factors – the authority ordered a national target inspection last week. The affected items are not commercially available. Further tests have so far not revealed any new contaminated finished products, domestic milk and milk products can be consumed safely!
That is why the pollution was formed
This year’s weather was particularly favorable for the growth of mold fungi and the development of toxin contamination produced by them, which can be transferred to milk by eating the contaminated feed. For this reason, the authority examines both the feed and milk sectors, and maintains close and continuous contact with their representatives.
Due to the known risk, responsible business behavior on the part of all involved parties is extremely important
The presence of toxins cannot be completely eliminated from the food chain, however, everything must be done to reduce the amount of toxins and keep them below the limit value in products. This can be achieved by conducting regular self-inspections on the part of businesses, and in the event of a problem or suspicion, they must immediately notify the authority. It is important that private laboratories are also obliged to inform Nébih of possible positive results, i.e. above the limit value.
