Walnut bejgli will be significantly more expensive this Christmas than ever before
Nut growers are closing a weak year, which is why bejlgi is becoming more expensive. Péter Kelemen, vice-president of the Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Trade Organization and Product Council (FruitVeB), told VG: the producers were able to harvest a weak, average crop on the domestic walnut plantations this year.

This year’s crop was a disappointment
“Although in the first half of the year it seemed that the sector was looking forward to a good season, a lower yield was achieved due to the summer drought. Since only a fraction of the plantations in our country are irrigated, the summer heat and low rainfall had a negative impact on the harvest. Although there were no complaints about the number of pieces, the size of the nut casings in most cases – especially on non-irrigated plantations – was less than usual, therefore the weight of the total crop was also below average”
– the specialist told the paper.
