Production of the original Mozartkugel has stopped in Austria
The confectionery company Mondelez has closed the factory on the outskirts of Salzburg where the “Echten Salzburger Mozartkugel” named after the composer Mozart was made for 127 years, the Austrian newspaper Kurier reported.
The original manufacturer, Salzburg Chocolate, went bankrupt in 2021. After insolvency proceedings were opened, production resumed in February 2022 under new ownership, but has fallen drastically due to the sharply increased costs of raw materials, packaging, transportation and, above all, energy. The last Mozartkugel was made on December 5.
However, production is likely to have stopped only temporarily. The rights to the brand’s recipe remain with the confectionery company Mondelez, which is reportedly restarting production in Poland or the Czech Republic.
The recipe for the marzipan-filled chocolate balls was dreamed up by confectioner Paul Fürst in 1890. His descendants have a pastry shop in the city center, where they still make this dessert by hand according to the original recipe. Paul Fürst did not trademark the name Mozartkugeln, so the bonbons are produced by several Austrian and foreign companies.
