Fish production in Hungary continued to grow in 2005. A total of 28 633 tons of fish was caught last year in domestic waters. The proportion of fish intended for human consumption also increased by 7 per cent.
The quantity of imported fish exceeded that of the previous year by 2.000 tons in 2004. Hungarian fish exports showed a drastic reduction of 49 per cent in both 2004 and 2005. Domestic consumption continued to grow as result of marketing campaigns staged by the industry. The most important positive development in recent years is that an agricultural environmental management program appreciating the “natural” character of fishing lakes has been in operation for four years. It is unfortunate that our national legislation is still not fully coherent with EU legislation, and our industry marketing program has been slowed down by the absence of AMC funding – pointed out Sándor Orosz.
