Csaba Lantos: the water replenishment project in the Sandbank will solve the irrigation of 4,000 hectares of land
The water replenishment project in the Sandbank will solve the irrigation of 4,000 hectares of land – the Minister of Energy emphasized on Monday in Zákányszék, at a press conference on the final stage of the development.
Csaba Lantos said: there was a debate about whether it was worth sprinkling water on the sand. In his opinion, it was worth it, because plants and, consequently, people need to be given life in the Sandbank. He emphasized that global climate change affects everyone, because of the changing climate, it is not possible to produce the same everywhere, but it is possible to live, everyone just has to do something about it. The project has begun the restoration of the water management of the Sandbank, water will be delivered to the area from both the Danube and the Tisza – said the Minister. Csaba Lantos drew attention to the fact that water replenishment is also needed in other areas of Hungary, and at the same time, the government is committed to making the Homokhátság a thriving place where it is good and worth living. Béla Mihálffy, the KDNP MP for the region, said that the entire project dates back 20 years and will be completed in December this year. He added that over the past two decades, the lack of water has been a major problem in the Homokhátság, there is little rain, and droughts have occurred year after year, making life difficult for farmers operating there. He emphasized that this problem will be solved with the investment, so that farmers will also be able to irrigate from surface waters. József Gacsályi, Deputy Technical Director General of the National Water Directorate, reported that the project involves the construction of the last 4 kilometers of a 32-kilometer water replenishment route from the Tisza. The gross cost of the investment is 1.9 billion forints.
