Research: engineering, programming and medicine are considered the most attractive careers by university students
Students of STEM, i.e. science and technology courses, would most like to find a career in engineering, programming or medicine, according to a recent study. In addition to the above, university students consider managerial careers, professions related to data science or artificial intelligence, and healthcare careers to be “cool”. After completing higher education, almost half of the students (49%) see their professional advancement at a foreign-owned multinational company or a large domestic company (44%). While two fifths (39%) of those who filled out the questionnaire would be employed by domestic small and medium-sized enterprises.
Siemens Zrt. and the higher education portal UNIside conducted an online questionnaire survey of university students’ career prospects and future career plans. More than two hundred undergraduate students in IT (28%), engineering (42%) and natural sciences (30%) took part in the survey. The majority (55%) of those filling in study at an educational institution in Budapest, more than a quarter of them study in the county seat (28%), and nearly a fifth (17%) study in another city.
The research reveals that two-thirds of the students (64%) decided on where they want to continue their studies, a third (32%) were influenced by their parents or a family member, and only 3% chose the given specialization at the encouragement of their teachers. In terms of career orientation, the majority of respondents (32%) were guided by professional awareness and professional interest, followed only by the expected salary (24%) and university rankings (11%).
