KSH: Unemployment rate unchanged
In September–November 2012, the number of unemployed people was 468 thousand resulting in an
unemployment rate of 10.6%.
The number of unemployed people was 468 thousand, 8 thousand (1.6%) more than in the same period
of the previous year, the unemployment rate of the total observed population was 10.6%, i.e. the same as
a year ago (the changes remained within the limit of sampling error).
In September–November 2012, among the 15–74 year-old male population, 254 thousand were
unemployed, 9 thousand more than a year earlier, and their unemployment rate was 10.7%. The number
of unemployed women was 213 thousand, basically the same as one year before. Their unemployment
rate was 10.5%, 0.3 percentage point lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
20.0% of unemployed people belonged to the 15–24 age group being underrepresented in the labour
market. The unemployment rate for this age group was 29.0%, 2.9 percentage points higher than a year
ago. The unemployment rate of persons belonging to the ‘best working age’ – the age group 25–54 – was
9.6%, basically the same as a year ago, while that of persons aged 55–64 lessened by 1.6 percentage
points to 7.1%.
48.0% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more. The average duration
of unemployment was 17.5 months.
