KSH: Agricultural output in 2024 fell by 8.0 percent compared to the previous year
The total output of agriculture in 2024 amounted to over 4.0 thousand billion forints, falling by 8.0 percent compared to the previous year. The decrease was caused by a combined contraction of the total production volume by 4.4 percent and the price level by 3.8 percent, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced on Friday, based on its first estimate. The volume of crop production was 11 percent lower, that of livestock production by 4.9 percent higher. The decrease in production affected almost all product groups, except potatoes, live animals and animal products. The performance of agriculture was lower primarily due to the lack of precipitation and the summer drought, which hindered crop production. The expanding volume of livestock farming did not compensate for the impact of the sector’s declining producer price level, the Central Statistical Office noted.

The total volume of cereals decreased by 16 percent, including barley by 29 percent, corn by 19 percent and wheat by 9.8 percent. The yield of rapeseed decreased by 31 percent and sunflower by 13 percent. The yield of protein crops and sugar beet increased, while that of tobacco decreased, so the yield of industrial crops overall decreased by 11 percent. The volume of fodder crops decreased by 4.6 percent and that of horticultural products by 1.7 percent. The volume of fruit crops decreased by 12 percent, including the yield of apples decreased by 31 percent, while that of peaches increased by 39 percent. The volume of wine decreased by 6.0 percent, while the volume of other plant products did not change.

The report also noted that the value of the output of the agricultural sector (calculated together with services and secondary activities) at current basic prices decreased by 8.0 percent, its production volume by 4.4 percent, and its price level by 3.8 percent. The volume of intermediate consumption increased by 2.9 percent, and its price decreased by 7.8 percent overall. According to the first data, among the expenditures, the volume of fertilizers and pesticides increased by 15 percent, veterinary costs by 3.1 percent, and feed by 2.5 percent, while other expenditures decreased slightly or remained unchanged. Gross value added decreased by 13 percent, and its volume by 17 percent. Labor use in agriculture was 5.6 percent lower, factor income was 15 percent lower, and entrepreneurial income was 35 percent lower than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported.
