The logistics sector may be facing a critical turning point: the goal is net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050
here is a lot of talk about sustainability these days, as the challenges that threaten our planet, such as climate change, sea level rise and the loss of biodiversity, may become more and more serious problems. A commitment to sustainability is also critical for logistics companies, especially when considering the role of the global transportation sector in greenhouse gas emissions, which can be said to be quite significant.
Currently, transport is responsible for around 21% of total greenhouse gas emissions. If the sector does not take effective steps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, assuming an additional 8% growth rate, this number is expected to double by 2050. Actors in the supply chain can do many things to reduce CO2 emissions. Fortunately, there are clearly visible efforts in the market in this regard, starting from route optimization, through the use of alternative drive vehicles, technological developments, and even green warehouses.
