Winter is Coming: 18,000 dogs are in danger
Most Hungarians are aware of the tough situation of animal welfare workers. We often see the problems caused by careless animal husbandry: stray dogs, cats (45%) and irresponsible pet care (43%) – according to a November 2019 study by Cofidis Credit Monitor.
Today in Hungary about 300,000 dogs have nowhere to go home. For them, the only chance of survival are shelters, where official support is about 40 million forints a year, which means about 133 forints per dog for a whole year. So you can count on only private donations. The Kutyaszemmel (Through Dog Eye) program was set up to support: This year nearly 6.5 million forints were gathered from community donations. This amount provides better life to 2,500 dogs in rural shelters. This year’s campaign ends at Christmas, with the goal of raising another 2 million HUF and helping another 2,000 dogs in shelters.
