We spent nearly one hundred thousand forints on food during the holiday season
Christmas preparations determined the turnover of the Kifli.hu online supermarket in December 2024. The demand for home baking, premium products and special holiday dishes was outstanding, but the purchase frequency and basket value also increased compared to the period in November.
Christmas increased not only the basket value, but also the frequency of purchases. In the Advent weeks, the basket value increased from the previous 26,600 forints to over 28,000 forints, by more than 5 percent, while the frequency of purchases also increased by nearly 10 percent. Thus, the average monthly spending realized by a customer jumped from 80,000 forints to over 92,500 forints, which represents an increase of 15 percent – according to the latest monthly data of the Kifli.hu online supermarket.
In December, 25 percent of shoppers chose products in the “home baking and cooking” category, compared to 19 percent previously. At the same time, demand for dairy products – such as cream, butter, margarine – and baking ingredients and spices increased significantly. Many preferred faster solutions: demand for frozen and ready-made cakes also increased.
As the festive season approached, quality products also came into focus. Premium meats – such as lamb, rabbit or sous-vide preparations –, fish, plant-based foods and Marks & Spencer categories generated significant sales. Quality sweets, cakes and flowers were also among the favorites of December purchases. On the other hand, the results also show that we crave breakfast less when our bellies are full, so traditional breakfast categories (liver, ham, cold cuts, bread, pastries, savoury pastries, milk, cheese, yoghurt) were less frequently included in the basket. But less chicken, mineral water and frozen pizza were also consumed.
