SPAR Hungary spent nearly 220 million forints on supporting social causes last year
Since its founding, more than 30 years ago, social responsibility and support for charitable causes have been an important part of SPAR Hungary’s corporate culture. The company helps thousands of needy families by collecting school supplies and non-perishable food, while also supporting healthcare and animal welfare organizations, as well as cultural and sports programs. Last year, SPAR spent nearly 220 million forints on these purposes.
In 2024, SPAR and its strategic partner, the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service, organized the Adni Öröm! school supplies collection campaign for the fourth time, in the framework of which the store customers helped families in need start school with a total of about 71 thousand school supplies. The supporters also purchased donation cards worth 1.4 million forints, and the Charity Service also used the money to provide school supplies to those in need. SPAR also supported the initiative with one million forints.
As a result of the 28th Christmas Adni Öröm! non-perishable food collection organized by the company and the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service, more than 26 thousand food packages reached disadvantaged people before the holiday. Customers of SPAR and INTERSPAR stores contributed 223 tons of food to the collection and purchased donation cards for almost 5.5 million forints, which SPAR Hungary supplemented with an additional 5 million forints. The Charity Service also purchased food from this amount.
The Hungarian Maltese Charity Service has been producing canvas shopping bags for the SPAR national network in Tiszabura, one of the poorest settlements in the country, since 2019. In the sewing shop of the Maltese Manufactory, the organization has produced more than 424 thousand bags in the past six years with the involvement of people in difficult circumstances, for whom the program also provides training and jobs.
In addition, within the framework of the strategic partnership, the company donated more than 1.1 million kilograms of food, vegetables and fruit that were withdrawn from sales but were still suitable for consumption to the Charity Service from 66 SPAR stores in 2024, from where they also reached those in need.
In 2024, the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service’s 200 and 500 HUF donation cards were also available for purchase in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores and in the SPAR online shop. The amount of the cards purchased has exceeded 50 million HUF since the start of the initiative. In addition, the company transferred 1 HUF from the price of each shirt-shoulder biodegradable bag purchased in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores to the Charity Service. Thanks to this, SPAR supported the organization’s work with more than 10 million HUF in 2024.
