Turkey sector faces serious growth opportunities
According to the data of the Hungarian Turkey Association, the demand for turkey meat in our country has further decreased, while market concentration has continued, but global effects predict positive trends. Global meat consumption is constantly increasing, the current volume, at 345 million kilograms, is almost five times the value in 1960. The role of poultry meat in the world’s food supply is unquestionable, taking over from pork in 2019. All these processes mean positive growth prospects for turkey meat, both in our country and globally.
Market analysis from the Hungarian Turkey Association using the presentation of Clay Burrows (Managing Director of Aviagen Turkey Ltd.).
The entire international turkey sector is in a period of great transformation, the main drivers of which are, on the one hand, changes in demand for food products and changes in the conditions of animal husbandry. What remains unchanged is the significance of the end of the year: the main sales period for turkey meat is approaching in our country and in the wider world, including one of the most significant turkey days, Thanksgiving, which also preserves cultural traditions, and Christmas.
Declining trade volume in the EU, North Africa ahead
The main trading volume also falls on this period, which, considering the past 7 years, has shown an overall decreasing trend in the largest turkey meat markets in the EU (including Great Britain): only Spain has increased year by year, while the number of live animals planted in Poland, France, Italy, Germany and Great Britain is also decreasing – the extent of this varies from country to country. Hungary also belongs to this group, where the planting volume in 2023 is also lower than before. The North African region has also been added to the world map of turkey meat, where the balance of turkey meat is positive.
All in all, two nations became the flag bearers in the EU: Poland and Spain, which became large in terms of production volume and also increased in consumption.
