Driving to new discounts
Large stores have become the primary scene for pre-planned major shopping, while smaller stores, accessible on foot are the places for daily shopping. Small stores were again visited most frequently in the first half of 2008 (on a weekly basis), while C&C stores were visited least frequently (six times per year). Households spent an average amount of HUF 1799 shopping, which was 4 per cent more than a year earlier. Average spending was lowest in small stores and highest in Cash & Carry stores (HUF 7,153) The weight of weekend shopping has continued to increase. Higher than average amounts are spent on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Sundays account for 10 per cent of total sales in Hyper markets. Cars are used for an increasing part of store visits, with more visits to big stores in remote locations for systematic shopping. These are most frequent in the C&C and hyper market channels, accounting for 83 and 60 per cent of shoppers respectively. Cars are also used frequently for visiting Lidl and Aldi discounts.
