A group bringing together research on climate change in various scientific fields has been formed at the University of Szeged (SZTE), the public relations directorate of the higher education institution informed MTI. According to the statement, climate change is one of the most pressing problems facing humanity today, and the effects of which are already being felt.

Due to the complexity of the problem, an interdisciplinary approach is essential, which allows the exploitation of synergies between different scientific fields and the opening of new research horizons. SZTE has a unique, but so far only partially exploited, potential for operating such an interdisciplinary research group, as numerous research groups and researchers at various faculties deal with issues related to climate change. The research group, which will be operational from 1 March, aims to pool these resources and create a platform that facilitates dialogue and collaboration, thus fostering shared knowledge.

The research group will focus on open research questions that require an interdisciplinary approach and are relevant for Europe, as identified in the Sixth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

These include the temporal and spatial evolution of risks and vulnerability, adaptation effectiveness, water, biodiversity, health risks, nature-based solutions and coastal environments, improving climate policy coherence, sectoral and systemic transformations, land use, agriculture and carbon removal, equity and just transitions, accelerating climate action, climate intervention, and the potential impacts and risks of solar radiation modification. The most important milestones of the project are based on the creation of a knowledge map and the establishment of a research network. The research group plans a project presentation, an internal university conference, workshops and the establishment of science organization platforms, the statement says.
