The buyer wants predictability: this is why foreign wines are gaining ground on the domestic market
More and more consumers are choosing New Zealand, Australian, Spanish or Austrian wines over Hungarian wines – one of the main reasons for this decision is quality and greater predictability of the experience at given price levels. According to the report by Agrárszektor.hu, the topic was discussed in the latest broadcast of the Alapvetés podcast by Zsófia Kövesdi, the Leading winemaker of Jammertal Borbirtok.
According to what was said in the podcast, the common point of international items is that the buyer “knows what he is getting” when he pays 3, 6 or 12 thousand forints, while domestic producers are constantly forced to adapt, in addition to economic pressure, climate change and the spread of grape diseases (such as golden yellowness).
The article also recalls that the structure of wine consumption is changing: while the audience for “big reds” has remained, the demand for light, fruity whites and rosés, as well as alcohol-free alternatives, is growing among those under 30 – which further increases the competition on the shelves.
