Fertilizer sales revenue increased despite lower turnover
Fertilizer distributors sold 783 thousand tons of fertilizer directly to farmers in the first half of 2025. Although the volume sold was 1.4 percent lower than a year earlier, due to the price increase, net fertilizer sales revenue increased by 16.7 percent (HUF 18.5 billion) to HUF 129 billion. Fertilizer prices were, on average, 12.7 percent higher in the first six months of 2025 than in the same period of the previous year, according to calculations by the Central Statistical Office. The 10 largest fertilizer distributors sold 85 percent of the total fertilizer volume directly to farmers in the period under review.
In natural weight, 783 thousand tons of fertilizers were sold directly to farmers in the first half of 2025, of which 686 thousand tons were single-component fertilizers and 97 thousand tons were compound fertilizers. The ratio of single-component to compound fertilizers was 88:12, while a year earlier it was 91:9.
The volume of single-component nitrogen fertilizers decreased by 5.3 percent in the period under review
Similar to previous years, the highest demand was for lime ammonium nitrate (MAS) in the first half of 2025. MAS accounted for 48 percent of the total fertilizer turnover and more than half (55 percent) of single-component nitrogen fertilizer sales, with a total of 372.9 thousand tons sold. The second most popular product among solid fertilizers was untreated urea (54.9 thousand tons), of which the same amount was sold as in the previous year. The total volume of single-component phosphorus fertilizers doubled compared to the base period, and within this, the demand for superphosphate with an active ingredient content of 18–20.5 percent increased more than one and a half times.
Potassium chloride sales amounted to 5 thousand tons, 1.2 thousand tons more than a year earlier
Among compound fertilizers, the most popular composition was NPK 10-26-26, the volume of 17.8 tons covered 2.3 percent of total fertilizer sales, and this compound also accounted for 18.3 percent of compound fertilizers sold. Other compositions sold in significant quantities during the period under review were NPK 15-15-15 (16.8 thousand tons) and NPK 15-20-10 (7.7 tons).
