Who will paint the homes of the future?
While the home renovation boom gives new momentum to the construction sector, a less visible but equally important challenge is shaping the market: there is a growing shortage of well-trained, dedicated painters. The latest Painter Master Meeting organized by PPG Trilak highlighted that professional training, innovation, and industry partnerships are key to long-term competitiveness.
Future Painters: Searching for Paths to Revitalize the Trade
This year, over 12,000 new homes will be built, and around 200,000 households are expected to undergo significant renovations. This movement has amplified the shortage of professionals, as the painting and decorating trade urgently needs new, committed workers. In rural areas, renovation subsidies are providing additional momentum, while the new home-buying program launching this autumn poses fresh challenges to the sector in meeting rising demand with quality solutions, up-to-date knowledge, and strong partnerships.
The Painter Academy: Knowledge and Talent Pipeline Firsthand
At its Painter Academy, founded in 2011, PPG Trilak offers professional development not only to experienced professionals but also to vocational school students, who can learn to use the latest paints, materials, and technologies. A unique aspect of the academy is its dual vocational training program that emphasizes hands-on experience: young participants are mentored and involved in lab and quality control tasks, gaining insight into color measurement and paint defect analysis.
In recent years, around 700 professionals have completed advanced training at the Painter Academy, and 400 students have graduated from its programs—ensuring that both knowledge transfer and generational renewal are firmly supported.
In the home renovation market, continued professional development, community building, and innovation provide the solid foundation upon which future market leaders can confidently build. The only question remains: who will be painting the homes of the next decade—and who will turn this into a competitive advantage?
At the 30th Painter Master Meeting of PPG Trilak, nearly 800 professionals gathered in Felsőlajos this year to explore the latest technologies and current market challenges in an informal and interactive environment. Alongside professional programs, there was much discussion about how to engage young people in career choices, guide them, and introduce them to the modern tools of the painting profession.
