A special official inspection has been launched in the case of a mass enteric – digestive – disease affecting kindergarteners – the National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK), the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), the Budapest Metropolitan Government Office and the Pest County Government Office announced in a joint statement with MTI on Friday. The 13th district government indicated that they had arranged for next week’s meals to be provided from other sources.

According to the information, the authorities have learned that the Budapest XIII. district, a cluster of enteric infections, presumably related to food, has begun affecting several educational and training institutions. Each institution is supplied by the same catering company, they added.

It was announced:

So far, 470 people have complained of vomiting and diarrhea after eating lunch, 47 of whom required hospitalization. In the case, the competent public health authority of the capital’s government office launched an epidemiological investigation, and the food chain safety staff of the Pest County Government Office suspended the operation of the affected kitchen, and then ordered an immediate major cleaning with disinfectant after the samples were taken.

According to the statement, the regional public health authority, Nébih and the NNGYK are treating the case as a priority case; the NNGYK has begun the investigation. The official inspection covers the technology of food preparation, the storage and transportation of ready-made meals, as well as the examination of technical and personal hygiene – they explained, noting that more detailed information will be provided after the investigation is completed.

The 13th district municipality announced that on Friday they provided children with meals in kindergartens from their own purchases, and they also ensured that next week’s meals would be provided from other sources.

“The leaders of our kindergarten area are constantly in contact with the relevant government office and NÉBIH staff, and are assisting in the investigation of the case in every way”

– they emphasized. The local government added that the affected parents will be informed and provided with the necessary assistance.
