K&H: You really need to buy consciously now!
According to the National Food Chain Safety Authority, 1.8 million tons of food is landfilled in Hungary every year, which is 68 kilograms per capita. And with the surge of Christmas shopping over the past few weeks, this volume could increase further this year. Gőbel Rebeka, winner of the K&H Sustainable Agriculture Fellowship Award, points out in her professional research that the main reason for wastage is the lack of awareness that is even more necessary in the current situation. And by planning your purchase, you can protect not only your wallet, but also the environment.
According to the data of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih), we dispose about 1.8 million tons of food per year in Hungary, which means 68 kilos per person. In the current situation, this quantity may increase even further, as we have accumulated huge stocks since the declaration of the emergency. According to the Trade Workers’ Independent Trade Union, shopping fever reaches one-and-a-half times the turnover before the end of the year, even though grocery stores are in constant supply, so we don’t have to worry about losing food.
