K&H: We haven’t reached equality yet, are we already turning back?
Hungary ranked 32nd in the World Bank’s list of 190 countries where the legal conditions for equal opportunities for women were examined. Out of the eight areas, our country did not receive the maximum score in only two: workplace and salary opportunities. According to the head of K&H HR, it is therefore important for companies to move forward in creating equal opportunities – even if fashion waves such as the tradwife movement, which revives the non-working, always immaculate American housewife type of the 50s, are taking off.
For the tenth time, in 190 countries around the world, the World Bank evaluated how well the legal environment supports women’s economic empowerment. The Women, Business and Law index tracks the legal opportunities faced by women in different life stages and career stages in eight areas: in terms of mobility, job opportunities, salary, marriage, childbearing, entrepreneurship, ownership opportunities and pensions. Hungary scored 93.8 out of a maximum score of 100, and thus occupies the 32nd place in the ranking of countries. We do not reach the maximum score for only two factors out of eight – workplace and salary. In the case of the former, the survey lacks the legal consequences of workplace harassment, and in the case of the latter, the equal pay mandated by law.
“The creation of equal opportunities is not a figure, but rather a puzzle, that is, the whole picture is made up of many, many small, but all the more important pieces. The results of the World Bank’s survey are forward-looking, but we also see that equal opportunities for women in the workplace have not yet been fully realized in our country. And this is not only indicated by the index, but also by the fact that, with the exception of certain areas, such as communication or HR, there are still fewer female top managers in companies. At K&H Group, therefore, in order to ensure equal opportunities, we make sure that women have the same opportunities in terms of employment, development opportunities and reaching senior management level.
– emphasized Leila Medvey, head of K&H HR.
