K&H: the application of AI is not an end in itself, but the key to success
Hungarian medium-sized and large companies have lagged somewhat behind world trends in the application of AI, according to research by the K&H innovation index. “The disadvantage is not insurmountable, but the application of AI deserves more attention, if only because the introduction of the technology requires a rethinking of the entire company’s operation,” stated Balázs Németh, head of innovation at K&H.
An instructive result can be obtained if we compare the global survey of the international consulting company McKinsey published at the end of May, as well as the latest results of the K&H innovation index produced every six months with domestic companies. According to McKinsey research, more and more companies around the world are using AI and are experiencing its positive impact in terms of efficiency. The acceptance of AI itself has risen from 50 percent in 2022 to 72 percent today. And the use of generative AI jumped from 33 percent in 2023 to 65 percent in one year. (It is of particular interest that the Asia-Pacific region and Greater China – that is, Hong Kong and Taiwan together with the People’s Republic of China – are far ahead in the application of technology, leaving North America and Europe behind.)
Enthusiasm is replaced by reality
According to K&H data, a similar explosive process took place in Hungary: in the first half of 2023, half of the companies declared that they would use AI. “Today, however, this proportion has fallen to 30 percent,” Balázs Németh pointed out. According to the innovation specialist, the initial enthusiasm has faded. The solutions available on the market cannot necessarily be applied one-to-one to all companies. In order for artificial intelligence to become a truly useful and especially value-creating tool, companies need their own developments and customized solutions. “That’s why it’s favorable that the proportion of own developments in Hungary has jumped from 4 to 17 percent in a single year,” emphasized Balázs Németh, who says that a similar trend can be observed elsewhere in the world: according to a McKinsey survey, the most successful organizations build ecosystems in which self-developed, off-the-shelf and open source models are mixed. In addition, highly successful companies deploy AI in three or more business uses.
