Less corn to be sown this year
The International Grains Council’s January projection indicates a global corn harvest of 1,313 million tonnes in the 2025/2026 marketing year, 6 percent more than in the 2024/2025 marketing year. Utilization is expected to be 1,297 million tonnes, which would exceed the previous season by 4 percent. By the end of the 2025/2026 season, 305 million tonnes of corn (+5.5 percent) may remain in storage.
In the European Union, according to Expana, corn may occupy an area of 7.7 million hectares this year, 6 percent less than a year earlier. In France, corn may be sown on a 4.5 percent smaller area, 1.48 million hectares, in the spring of 2026. In Poland, the cultivated area may expand by 1 percent to 1.3 million hectares. Analysts calculate a 17 percent smaller area in Romania. In Italy, corn may be planted on 500 thousand hectares (-2 percent), and in Germany, it will remain at 490 thousand hectares. In Hungary, according to Expana, the crop may cover 670 thousand hectares this year. According to AKI PÁIR data, feed corn changed hands at an average producer price of 72.3 thousand forints/ton in the fourth week of January, which was 6 percent lower than a year earlier. On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, corn was quoted in the March range of 166–170 dollars/ton between January 20 and 30. On the Paris Mercantile Exchange, the March settlement price of the crop fluctuated between 191–194 euros/ton between January 19 and 30.
