Dr Tamás Kertész, managing director of Farm Tojás Kft. explains that stricter animal welfare regulations have led to a slow transition from caged production to alternative forms of egg farming at the national level. This process will accelerate in 2026, with some retail chains completely phasing out the sale of caged eggs.

“Unfortunately, populist politics doesn’t prioritise the interests of society as a whole, so “cuteness” becomes the focus rather than sustainability, which is a serious professional mistake”,

opines Csaba Kollár, managing director and owner of Hírös Tojás.

“Farm Tojás continuously supplies partners with deep litter, free-range and organic eggs, while caged products play a smaller role. Deep litter eggs are experiencing particularly strong growth and L-sized products remain popular”,

says Dr Tamás Kertész.

Inevitable restructuring

Dr Tamás Kertész also points out that in a few years’ time only eggs from organic, free-range or other alternative farming systems are expected to be available on store shelves. Csaba Kollár believes the import of eggs from outside the European Union should only be permitted in any member state if the production conditions and actual practices in that country are at least equivalent to the standards applicable in the EU. Hírös Tojás has revamped the packaging of its lower-priced products, making it more aesthetic and stylish. In 2026 they are communicating their Hungarian Product Trademark status to both retailers and consumers even more.
