The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) has confirmed the presence of bluetongue. The tests showed PCR positivity in samples from two large cattle herds in Somogy County, which were kept in one holding and therefore formed an epidemiological unit. The veterinary authority immediately ordered a surveillance lockdown on the farm. The appropriate vaccine is available to protect against the disease.

Symptoms indicating a general viral infection (lethargy, high fever, runny nose) were also seen in the beef cattle herds. Since the clinical symptoms appeared and the laboratory tests also showed the presence of the disease, according to EU regulations this disease is a confirmed case, and thus officially an outbreak.

The Nébih laboratory determined that the virus belongs to serotype 3

The local animal health authority immediately ordered an observation lockdown on the farm. The disease can be protected against with a vaccine, and the appropriate vaccine is available. Several serotypes of bluetongue are widespread throughout Europe, and the disease is present in 21 EU member states. Vaccinated animals are marketable, but certain so-called third-country trade restrictions may occur. Bluetongue does not pose a food safety risk. The virus does not spread from animals to humans, and food produced from potentially infected animals does not pose a danger to humans.
