The founder and managing director of Clasman Kft., a Hungarian company that has developed equipment that efficiently and sustainably produces high-quality drinking water from the humidity of the air, was the guest in the podcast of the former president of the Republic, János Áder, titled Blue Planet, published on Tuesday, which can also be viewed on the most popular video sharing platform.

Tamás Mendi, head of the food industry company founded in 2011 and committed to sustainable development, emphasized that they are proud to offer a local solution to the global drinking water problem. Two billion out of eight billion people in the world do not have access to adequate quality and quantity of drinking water, he said. János Áder, chairman of the board of trustees of the Blue Planet Climate Protection Foundation, noted that according to the UN’s estimate, the number of inhabitants of the Earth will be around ten billion by 2050, and taking into account the properties of water bases, half of the population at that time will live in water-scarce areas. Water consumption is growing twice as fast as the population, he added, noting that, in his opinion, such technologies will be increasingly needed. In answer to his question, Tamás Mendi said that their equipment can be used in almost all conditions, it can produce 1,000 to 1,500 liters of water at 80 percent humidity and 30 degrees Celsius. Mist is everywhere in the air, more and more; According to the World Meteorological Organization, due to global warming, the humidity in the Earth’s atmosphere has been seven percent higher in the recent period – explained the expert. He explained that even in deserts there are periods when there is enough moisture in the air. If the Hungarian soldiers go to Africa on some mission, even they could use the equipment – suggested the executive. At the same time, he added that “we are not sitting on an inexhaustible tub of water” in Hungary either; it is no longer an extreme thing to announce drinking water restrictions even in a settlement with a good infrastructure. We can also pollute our groundwater and there are places where the groundwater level has dropped by eight meters – warned Tamás Mendi.

János Áder emphasized that although Hungary is apparently rich in water, it is not unlimited, and every opportunity must be used

When he suggested that the equipment practically produces distilled water, the manager said that it works like a dehumidifier, only much more efficient, and then it is turned into drinking water using a water treatment technology: it is filtered and minerals are added. The equipment can also work with renewable energy, they will be able to sell it together with a solar panel system and a suitable battery capacity – said Tamás Mendi, adding that these must be sized for each location in order to ensure continuous operation. In response to János Áder’s question about how much drinking water costs, the manager said that 0.25 kWh per liter, which is HUF 9 in Hungary today. “A liter of drinking water costs less than ten forints, that’s a competitive price,” responded the former president. He also recalled that the Budapest Stock Exchange presented the company among the success stories of fifty domestic companies in December 2022, they were included among the fifty most inspiring domestic companies. Tamás Mendi spoke about the fact that the technology can also be used in agriculture, in the so-called “hydrocultures”. Furthermore, they want to produce a device of a size that can be used in households, so that “those households would never have to buy bottled water again”, but it could even be used on farms. At Planet Expo, there were a lot of interested people – said the managing director, they discussed access to the African and Indian markets, but also cooperation with Hungarian companies.
