You can get fish at cheaper prices this year
This year, fish producers cut prices by 10-12 percent, the significant drop in feed prices and the wetter weather than last year had a good effect on domestic fish farms. Even though labor and energy costs rose, producers achieved positive changes in prices. If commercial chains also pass on these discounts, it is expected that this will mean cheaper fish for customers during the holiday season.
According to a survey conducted by Agroinform.hu, 80 percent of the population plans to have fish on their Christmas table at the end of the year. Live carp is expected to be available at a price of HUF 1,800-2,200 per kilogram, while the price of sliced carp will be HUF 3,500-4,000. A fillet of African catfish can cost around HUF 4,000, while the price of a kilo of filleted gray catfish can range between HUF 7,500-8,000 during the season.
Dr. István Németh, president of the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Association (Mahal), said that for the Christmas period, approximately 80 percent of domestic fish production comes from carp, which is enough to meet domestic demand. Although fish consumption is slowly increasing, Christmas is still an outstanding period where a significant number of consumers decide to buy fish. Dr. Németh also recommends that it is worth buying the Christmas fish in the first days of December, as freezing for a few weeks does not negatively affect the quality of the fish.
