Coca-Cola HBC Hungary and MATE have announced a university tender for the development of a coffee grounds collection system
Coca-Cola HBC Hungary and the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences (MATE) started a collaboration with the aim of comprehensively examining the grounds produced during everyday coffee drinking and exploring ways of recycling them. As the first step of the project, a student tender was launched, which attempts to develop a safe collection and return system for coffee grounds produced by Coca-Cola HBC Hungary’s catering industry customer partners.
Today in Hungary, about 80 percent of the adult population drinks coffee on a daily basis, we consume 18,000 tons of coffee every year, from which more than 14,000 tons of coffee grounds are produced. The vast majority of the tailings, rich in valuable substances, currently become waste, as they are not included in the cycle.

The company sells coffee to more than 2,200 customer partners in the hospitality industry across the country. As a responsible large company, Coca-Cola HBC Hungary pays special attention to the entire life cycle of the products produced in the course of its activities. And in order to create and apply the most effective solutions possible in your daily activities, a thorough knowledge of the market is essential. With this in mind, the company conducted research among its hospitality industry partners on the use of pomace to gain insights and experiences from the sector.
