Kastélyosdombó became the capital of Hungarian hops
A few hundred enthusiastic villages in Somogy county have become the “capital of Hungarian hops” in recent years. The settlement’s hop plantation supplies one of the leading Hungarian breweries with fresh hops. The harvest will start in a few days – writes Kapos.hu.
In the beginning, hops production started on one hectare in the small Somogy county settlement, Kastélyosdombó, but today they farm the plant on 14 hectares. The plantation regularly employs approximately 30 people, which also includes drying equipment and a palletizing plant. Nowadays, the village is also referred to as the “capital of Hungarian hops” for this reason.
Last weekend, the official opening of this year’s harvest was held in the Erdődy Castle Park, where Tamás Tarpataki, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said that at the beginning of his career, only seven, then only five, hectares of hops were produced in Hungary, and the number later decreased further. This is also why it is remarkable that hop cultivation has taken root again in Kastélyosdombo in recent years.
“With our beers, we create the joy of true togetherness together for a better world. The result of the fruitful collaboration is now a premium light beer brewed from Hungarian barley, Hungarian hops, with the outstanding knowledge of Hungarian brewers.”
– said Nikos Zois, CEO of HEINEKEN Hungária Sörgyárak Zrt.
At 3:00 p.m., this year’s harvest was ceremonially started, where the participants could follow the journey of the hops from the plantation to the beer jar as a special experience. The harvesting equipment was launched and the drying equipment and the pelletizing plant were presented, among other things. In fact, the participants were able to taste it for the first time this year.
