Fish prices do not increase in Hungary at Christmas – despite the summer heat, there is no problem with supply
Despite the summer heat and rising grain prices, there is good news from Hungarian fish farmers: this Christmas the price of fish will not increase, and buyers will be able to buy the most popular species, such as carp and gray catfish, at last year’s prices. According to the managers of the Hortobágyi Halgazdaság, there was no mass fish mortality despite the unfavorable weather, so the end-of-year supply will not be negatively affected by the summer.
Stable supply from Hortobágy
The Hortobágyi Halgazdaság, which sells 1,500 tons of fish annually, places particular emphasis on the Christmas period, when half of the total annual quantity is delivered to stores and markets. CEO Károly Simon told ATV Híradó: “We are nearing the end of the fishing season, and fortunately the numbers show a more favorable picture than we expected after such a brutal summer heat. We escaped without a mass fish mortality. We can already say that we will not have less fish than in previous years.”
Rising grain prices, but not before Christmas
Although the price of grain needed for fish farming has doubled this year, the Hortobágy Fish Farm is not directly affected by this, as they have stocks purchased at favorable prices from last year. According to Róbert Pásztor, the fish farm’s production director, the supplementary feed feeding does affect the production costs of the fish, but this will not yet affect this year’s Christmas prices.
Fish as a holiday dish – customers find it expensive
While the price of fish remains stable, many Hungarian customers still find this dish expensive. According to statistics, the vast majority of people in the country eat fish once a year, at Christmas. Despite this, fish farmers say that traditional Hungarian fish dishes, such as fish soup or fried carp, remain particularly popular during the holidays.
