Calories tax in favor of the public interest
Unhealthy nutrition and obesity are becoming increasingly serious problem in the developed part of the world. It is no coincidence, that in the United States, sugary soft drinks, in Denmark foods containing saturated fats would be taxed by extra tax.
The reason is obvious. Obese people are more prone to heart siseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal problems and cancer. Their treatment is much more expensive than normal-weight counterparts: 10 percent of the U.S. health care expenditures are attributable to this problem. Since the costs contributing by all people, obesity is not a private matter, a so-called externality, just like pollution – reports Világgazdaság Online.
