Agricultural higher education is the key to our future
Agriculture and the food industry provide indispensable services from the point of view of the national economy and the survival of Hungarian society, and produce irreplaceable products. Thus, it has become a strategic sector, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on Sunday, at the ceremonial opening of the academic year of the University of Debrecen.
The head of the ministry talked about the fact that more and more people are realizing the importance of the sector. All this is shown by the fact that agricultural higher education is becoming more and more popular, and students’ confidence in agricultural higher education is constantly increasing. Young people clearly see that agriculture offers a secure livelihood and a career opportunity.
István Nagy reminded that this year 28 percent more people can start their studies in the field of agricultural training than before
This means that 4,082 university students nationally start their studies in the agricultural or food industry. And 451 of them are in Debrecen, at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management. The University of Sopron shows an outstanding result, where 1,227 applicants were admitted, which is 77 percent higher than last year’s results, explained the minister. He emphasized that the agriculture and food industry is the incredibly innovative sector that is the basis of our future and our survival, thus a real national security factor. Our common interest is long-term safe food production, which cannot be realized without well-trained professionals and scientific achievements and developments. This requires faith, knowledge, self-aware and consistent work – underlined the head of the ministry.
