Are synthetic meat and artificial eggs coming?
On Wednesday, the European Commission announced the registration of two new European citizens’ initiatives. One initiative calls for the closure of animal farms and the production of synthetic meat, while the other seeks to improve the transparency of food labeling.
Animal protection and the production of synthetic meat
The organizers of the initiative called “Stop the cruel slaughter of animals” are asking the European Commission to encourage the production of plant proteins, including plant-based milk and egg substitutes, as well as synthetic meat. In addition, they are calling for the reduction of the number of farm animals and the gradual closure of livestock farms.
Transparent food labeling
The initiative “Enough with adulterated food: origin indication on the label” aims to provide European consumers with transparent information about the food they buy. The organizers want to ensure that all products clearly indicate their origin and comply with environmental, health and labor standards in the internal market.
The reaction of the European Commission
Since both initiatives meet the formal requirements set out in the legislation, the European Commission declared them legally acceptable. However, the content of the proposals has not yet been examined. The content of the initiatives reflects the opinion of the organizing group and not necessarily the position of the European Commission.
