Chinese organic food on the European borders
An ever increasing assortment of organic produce from China finds its way onto supermarket shelves in Europe.
Organic produce still accounts for only a tiny
fraction of China's food consumption.
Guo Chunmin of the China Organic Food Certification Center (COFCC) estimates
that currently only 0.2 per cent of all agricultural products in China are
certified as "organic."
"The (Chinese) market still is in its infancy," say organizers of the
Bio Exposition, but not without hinting at its "enormous potential."
China has big plans particularly with exporting their organic food.
China currently has 430 institutions that are empowered to issue certificates
for organic produce, adds Guo Chunmin.
Many farms worked under "completely different standards," he notes,
and the Chinese government currently is striving to formulate stringent rules
to ensure that organic produce would stand up to the international standard
requirements.
