Good news: the French mustard crisis is now over
Mustard has been missing from French department store shelves for months. There were stores where you couldn’t get any mustard at all, and there were stores where the amount you could buy was maximized at one bottle per day. The shortage seems to be over, from October Dijon mustard will be back on the shelves of French stores, reports MTI.
The shortage, which occurred long before the war in Ukraine, was triggered by the heat wave that destroyed about half of Canada’s mustard seed crop in 2021. The North American country, the number one mustard seed producer in the world, delivered 80 percent of the seed to France. (The remaining 20 percent is grown in Burgundy.)
“It is very important to increase the domestic ratio in order to face the climate challenges affecting different countries”
Luc Vandermaesen, president of the Burgundy Mustard Association (ABM), which brings together mustard seed growers and mustard producers, told the French news agency AFP.
