63 percent of young Hungarians live in independent households, which is a particularly high proportion compared to the data of the last decade. However, what are the plans of the 19-29 year olds who belong to the remaining 37 percent? – the K&H youth index for the second quarter of this year sought an answer to this question. Based on the survey, the majority of young people planning to buy a home – 72 percent – would partially solve the move with the help of a loan.

The housing conditions of young people aged 19-29 have changed – this was revealed by the youth index survey conducted in the second quarter of K&H, which examined, among other things, how many people live in independent households and the proportion of people living with their parents, as well as how those planning to move would solve the buying a home in the future.

One of the most important changes is that in the second quarter of this year, 63 percent of the young people surveyed said that they already live in their own household. This represents a record level in the history of the survey, which has been published every quarter since the end of 2012, and also represents an increase compared to previous periods. An example of a result similar to the current 63 percent occurred in the first and third quarters of 2023, when the proportion of young people living in independent households was 62 and 63 percent, respectively. The most serious turning point occurred in the early 2020s, until then the proportion of young people living in independent apartments was below 50 percent, but after that the result was stably above 50 percent.

The survey also revealed that more than 24 percent of young people who typically live with their parents consider it very important to start an independent life as soon as possible. This intention is much more definite for women than for men: 40 percent of women want to move out of the maternity hotel as soon as possible, while only 16 percent of men do. At the same time, 61 percent of them believe that they will be able to move out of their parents’ house later. The proportion of those who do not think about becoming independent at all is not insignificant, 15 percent. This rate is 31 percent among relatively older people, 26-29-year-olds, while 11 percent among 19-25-year-olds, who are still closer to their teenage rebellious period.
