Significant funding sources may be available for the Hungarian fishing sector
In the coming months, several long-awaited calls for tenders will be received by the actors in the domestic fisheries and aquaculture sector, Ede Timmel, the executive director of the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Interprofessional Organization (MA-HAL), told Agrárszektor. The profession expects particularly high interest due to the challenges of the recent period.
The currently available support package is MAHOP Plusz, which is being opened up to the actors in the sector in stages. The first phase of the program was already available in 2024 and provided a source for the compensation of ecosystem services: farms operating fish ponds could apply for a support of 40 thousand forints per hectare per year. The scheme proved to be extremely popular, the budget was completely exhausted in the first round, but with a later increase in the budget, all eligible applicants received support.
The subsequent phases may bring new investment and development opportunities for fish farmers. According to MA-HAL, these calls for proposals may also support projects that improve technological modernization, sustainability developments and competitiveness, which may have an impact on the entire food economy in the long term.
The professional organization expects that there will be a significant willingness to submit applications when the applications are opened, as some of the domestic fish farming enterprises want to implement developments that have been postponed for years.
