The GfK German consumer sentiment index for January improved
The January German consumer sentiment index of the Nuremberg economic research institute GfK improved more significantly than analysts had expected.
The sentiment index in January strengthened to minus 25.1 points, the highest value since August, from minus 27.6 points in December. Analysts expected a modest improvement of minus 27 points for January. A year ago, the indicator was weaker, standing at minus 37.6 points.
The indicator for assessing the current economic environment improved to minus 0.4 points from minus 2.3 points in December. The indicator reflecting the population’s income expectations changed from minus 16.7 points to minus 6.9 points, and the number measuring the population’s willingness to spend changed from minus 15 points to minus 8.8 points.
