The situation of Polish apple producers has improved due to the decrease in the Chinese harvest
The season was good, around 3.2 million tons of apples go to processors in Poland this year, but Idared is no longer the leading variety.
At the Prognosfruit conference held in Belgrade, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) forecast a higher apple harvest for Poland than the country’s own statistical office. While the Polish forecast spoke of only 4.2 million tons of apples, WAPA already spoke of 4.495 million tons, of which approximately 3.2 tons will go to processing plants.
China has put Polish apple producers in a better position
Since the amount of apple juice concentrate (AJC) and non-concentrated (NFC) apple juice stocks is below the average of the previous years, the products of the Polish processing plants will be able to be sold easily. This is also due to the fact that the Chinese apple harvest will be 22% smaller than expected due to spring frost damage, so the United States of America will also export from Poland. However, it is a fact that while the Polish economy is affected by the rise in gas prices, thus increasing the costs of processing by 50-60%, the Chinese processing industry is not, so those products will be cheaper than those produced in Poland.
Idared is no longer the favorite
According to WAPA’s forecast for 2022, the dominance of the Idared apple variety will end in Poland, and Red Jonaprince will take its place, which became better known in the country in 2017, but was already grown in quantity in 2018.
