The Waste-Free Tisza program was established by the Tisza PET Cup, the National Water Directorate General, with the support of The Coca-Cola Foundation – the global foundation of The Coca-Cola Company in 2019 with the aim of cleaning the river from plastic waste. The latest result of the project will also be visible in Budapest in June: the container serving water purification and community purposes will achieve its final function in the Carpathians. The most important purpose of the Drinking Water Exchange Point (SWAP – safe water access point), which provides both sanitation and community functions, is to provide adequate quality drinking water from the rivers in places where public utility services do not allow this.

Within the framework of the Waste-Free Tisza program, the Tisza PET Cup, the National Directorate General of Water and Coca-Cola Hungary, with the support of The Coca-Cola Company’s global foundation (The Coca-Cola Foundation), have been working together for years on the ecological protection of the Tisza and its tributaries and the river cleaning. Since 2019, with the help of volunteers, including employees of Coca-Cola Hungary, they have freed the river from more than 100 tons of waste, and have also contributed to the development of Transcarpathian waste management.

“Numerous technological developments also contributed to the success of the Waste-Free Tisza program: GPS-based tracking helps to map the path of waste more effectively, thanks to which the path and extent of plastic pollution in the river can be revealed. We built our first River Rescue Center next to the Kiskörei Weir, where we sort river waste and prepare it for recycling. A prominent example of the latter is the “Plastic Kayak” built from river plastic.

– emphasized Miklós Gyalai-Korpos, project coordinator of the PET Cup.
