Here are the data: new record in mobile internet traffic
A quick video call can easily bridge distances during Christmas and New Year’s, and evenings spent together in front of the screen – in the company of a well-chosen Christmas movie – create a real shared experience for the whole family. Yettel’s newly published data shows that compared to the previous year, internet traffic between Christmas and New Year’s set a new record with another nearly 30 percent increase, and data traffic related to TV services was 27 percent higher on New Year’s Day than on an average day. Another interesting fact is that in December, more than a third of data traffic, 34 percent, was already carried out on a 5G network.
During the 2025 holiday season – between December 24 and January 1 – Yettel users consumed nearly 30 million GB of data. This is 6.5 million GB more than the data traffic of the same period last year, an increase of about 28 percent, and the highest traffic ever measured. The continued popularity of Yettel’s OtthonNet wireless home internet service, which also uses 5G technology, also contributed significantly to the increase in data traffic during the holiday season.
If we were to use this nearly 30 million GB of data used during the holidays only for streaming, we could watch approximately 9 million movies or football matches in full HD quality on Yettel TV, or stream high-quality music for more than five thousand years.
There is more TV viewing during the holidays, and New Year’s Day brought significant viewership
Holiday habits that differ from those of weekdays were also observed in television. December 23-29. In the period between 2011 and 2012, the average time spent watching TV by households increased by about 10 percent compared to the previous week, and on some days, such as December 25 and 26, this figure reached 16 percent. On the first day of the new year, the trend was even stronger: on January 1, the average time spent watching TV significantly exceeded the values of the same day of the week preceding the holiday period (December 18) by 27 percent. Yettel also supported all this with specially selected content: its TV service, Yettel TV, paid special attention this year to offering tailored television programming to viewers looking for holiday relaxation during this period. In the thematic selection titled “Christmas is All of Me!”, December 17-28. Between 17 channels, more than seventy films were available to subscribers of the Yettel TV S, M and L packages.
It’s not just the internet: we wish you a happy new year by phone and SMS
As for the popular times for phone calls and SMS sending: on December 24, most people called their distant loved ones in the morning hours or organized the evening’s program: between 9 am and 12 pm, the number of calls made per hour was two to three times higher than at other times of the day. The situation is similar with SMS, but there was also a peak on the 24th between 7 and 8 p.m., when the number of text messages sent also increased by one and a half to two times the average per hour measured during the day.
On New Year’s Eve, in the hour after midnight, call traffic increased by six to eight times compared to the previous and subsequent hours, and doubled the usual daily hourly average. SMS traffic also increased significantly, by about three times the usual amount, in the first hour of the New Year, and it is interesting that the same increase was observed between 8 and 11 a.m. on January 1 – users probably used the hours after waking up to wish their friends a happy new year, and chose SMS for this purpose.
