Here is the Szupermenta summer seed test: zucchini in the lead role
Experts from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) tested zucchini seeds in the latest product test of the Szuperminta program. Based on laboratory measurements, the germination capacity of one product did not reach the limit value specified in the regulation. The final ranking was based on the results of the popularity test. The test continues with monitoring the development of the plants at the Nébih Szarvas variety testing station.

Due to its versatile use, zucchini is one of the popular vegetables of the summer season, which is why it often finds a place in the vegetable garden. Gardeners can choose from several types of zucchini seeds: in addition to the dark green, cylindrical shape, they can grow zucchini with light stripes or yellow skin, or even spherical zucchini. The Szupermenta comparative study included seeds promising dark green, cylindrical zucchini, which are widely and continuously available on the markets and in stores. A total of 11 seeds intended for small garden sowing were examined by the experts, including four hybrids. Regarding the indicated manufacturer or distributor, nine were domestic and two were foreign.
Nébih laboratory experts checked the main quality indicators – germination capacity and purity – and virological testing was also carried out
Based on the measurement results, an objection was raised in one case, as the germination capacity of the seed did not reach the limit value specified in the relevant regulation. Due to a quality defect, the official inspectors warned the distributor concerned and asked them to destroy the batch still in stock. The experts checked the presence of mandatory markings and basic product information on the packaging of zucchini seeds, such as the indication of the variety and origin. The test also considered whether the seeds were offered to customers in sealed packaging that preserved quality. The tested products met all criteria.
The popularity test could not be left out this time either
Experts and laypeople scored the seeds based on various customer criteria (such as the information on the packaging or purity), and the final ranking was based on their evaluation. The top step of the podium was taken by two Rédei Kertimag Black Beauty products with different metal seals, Gartenland Green Machine came in second place, and MoravoSeed Nefertiti came in third place. The tested seeds have already been sown by the experts at the Nébih Szarvas variety testing station, where they continuously monitored the development of the plants. The Szupermenta team will report on practical experiences soon.
