The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in two fattening turkey farms in Csongrád-Csanád County. The affected flocks are in the process of being eliminated.

The animal health authority confirmed the disease in fattening turkey flocks of 4,800 and 18,800 individuals located in the Szentes settlement of Csongrád-Csanád County. The suspicion of bird flu arose due to the increased mortality experienced in the flocks. The Nébih laboratory detected the H5N1 subtype of the virus in samples taken from the affected flocks. The elimination of the herds and the epidemiological investigation are in progress, and the office’s experts have designated protective zones with a radius of 3 km and observation zones with a radius of 10 km around the farms.

It is important to highlight that the national chief veterinarian ordered the mandatory confinement of poultry kept for commercial purposes in mid-October

In the case of farms keeping poultry for other purposes (such as backyard flocks), he prescribed that poultry be fed and watered in a closed place. Furthermore, Nébih once again draws the attention of animal keepers that strict and consistent compliance with disease control regulations is key to preventing the introduction of the virus, as the pathogen is still present in wild birds. Everything must be done to minimize the possibility of direct and indirect contact between poultry and wild birds by farmers.
