Starting school and consumer protection – let’s consciously buy school supplies too!
With the start of school approaching, not only students and their parents are preparing for the new academic year, but consumer protection is also paying special attention to checking the available school supplies – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) pointed out in its announcement on Monday.
During the shopping related to the beginning of the school year, the government’s main goal is to ensure the protection of Hungarian families and children, as well as to guarantee their financial and physical security, the ministry emphasized.
Government offices under the professional supervision of NGM, acting in the capacity of consumer protection and market surveillance authorities, act in all cases if a violation of the law is suspected, whether it is a question of deceptive commercial practices or the distribution of a product that is not suitable from a product safety point of view.
In previous years, the accredited Food and Chemical Laboratory of the Ministry responsible for consumer protection tested many products in connection with the start of the school year, including colored pencils, watercolors, plasticine, colored paper, tempera, crepe paper and lace sheets. The tests covered the potential metal – copper – and toxic heavy metal – lead, cadmium – content of the products, as these can cause serious health damage – they listed in the announcement.
The NGM found that the laboratory did not find any toxic substances during the tests.
